What about E-Readers?

There’s no doubt that part of the future of publishing is in E-Readers.  However I for one can’t see myself picking up an E-Reader in the near future.  Why you might ask?  Well there’s something I like about being able to pick up a book and read it.  Probably another reason I won’t pick up an E-Reader is the simple fact that I already spent 8+ hours in front of a computer screen and don’t need to spend my reading time doing the same.  My eyes already give me troubles.

Despite my objections to it them there’s no doubt that publishing is going electronic.  Just a little while ago I read an excerpt of Michael Balkinds Sudden death on Book Buzz.  The format was enjoyable for the 10 pages that I read, but would I read a 300+ page book in that format?  I don’t think so.

But here’s the deal.  If having the latest Kindle or iPad gets you to read then by all means pick one of those up and read.  If you think having a book makes you look like a nerd and it’s cool to have an iPad or Kindle, get it.

So where do you fall on the e-readers: gonna get one, can’t live with out it, no thanks I’ll take a hard bound book any day!

Distracted!

It’s obviously been a few months since I’ve posted here.  The main reason is because I’ve been distracted. There are some good distractions and some that I’d call bad or optional distractions.

For instance a lot of my “distraction” the past few months has been World of Warcraft.  I’m still playing, but things have changed and I’m making more of a concerted effort to do things that are more important.  One of those being reading.

I read somewhere recently (and I might be misquoting it), perhaps on Michael Hyatts blog, that leaders read at least one book a month and probably more.  I’m guessing that most of the books that they read are non-fiction, but I’m going to throw fiction in there as well.

Here’s a couple of other distractions that I can think of.

  • TV/Movies
  • Internet
  • Yard Work
  • Kids

Not all bad distractions, but things that might keep you from doing any sort of reading.

So what distracts you from reading?

Why do you read?

After an extended holiday season I’m back.  My goal for 2010 is to continue to bring you fiction for men (I might slip a non-fiction in there!) and hopefully some author interviews.

Here’s how we are going to start 2010 off. Why do you read?

Here’s a few reasons why I read.

  • Escape – It’s cliche (at least that’s what my wife told me when she saw the title of this), but it’s probably the main reason why I read. To enter a world that I will probably never be a part of. To dream of being a multi-millionaire thrill seeking adventurer. But for those novels that aren’t about playboy millionaires, I read to get a different perspective on life.
  • Learn – Fiction is made up but somewhere in there, I’m fairly confident there is something real that we can learn from.
  • It’s not TV or a computer -  During the weekdays I spend 8 hours in front of a computer screen and then come home for more.  The weekends are not usually that bad, but more than I care to admit.

So tell me.  Why do you read?

Who or what influenced your reading?

Of course we all grow up learning to read and needing to read, but somewhere along the line maybe there was something or someone that influenced your reading and it spurred you on.  Or maybe I’m just in the minority on this one. There’s a couple of things that I can look back on that gave me my love of reading.

  • Book It – Yeah the Pizza Hut reading program.  Loved that contest and for at least 2 years, maybe more, I was blasting through the books. I was lucky in the fact that there were no restrictions on what I could read, it just needed to be a certain number of pages.  And since I was clearing Tom Clancy books at 5th or 6th grade level it was awesome!
  • The Librarian – Growing up my parents owned a restaurant that was about a block away from the city library.  So in the summer when I was stuck at the store, I’d head over to the library and read a lot. But also there was a children’s librarian that was a great influence on my reading style.  Looking back some of the books he suggested me reading, and I did, probably weren’t the greatest, but nothing kept a young boys attention like these books.

So what or who influenced your reading?  Writers your welcome to chime in as well since to me reading and writing fall hand in hand.

Fiction For Men Manifesto!

This site is for those who like to read, those who want to read but aren’t sure what to read and for those who are just looking for something new to read. It will center around books a guy likes because well I’m a guy. Although the Twilight series of books some what inspired this site, I will tell you that you won’t find reviews about that series of books on here. You will however find books that center around things that guys like. Women, action, fast cars. That type of stuff.

And since I still have to work 8 to 5 (I’d love to have that 9 to 5 job or even better a 20 hour a week job) there will be other topics posted that don’t require the reading of a book. Those topics might include some personal insights, upcoming book releases and other random drivel I might find. If I’m really feeling it, I might even post a bit of my writing, but I’d probably have to down a few whiskey’s before doing that and totally forget about it afterwards.

So here’s to the books that men want to read and things that interest guys.

If there’s something you’d like to see covered by all means shoot me an e-mail and I’ll see what I can do to cover it.
