Nowhere To Run – CJ Box (Joe Pickett)

CJ Box is back with another Joe Pickett novel and like all of the other Joe Pickett novels it doesn’t disappoint!! It’s full throttle from start to end.

We start the novel with Joe Pickett on horseback looking for something or someone who had skinned and butchered an elk that a hunter had injured.  This ride into the back country is special for Joe as it’s his last one based out of Baggs, his assignment for the last year.  He’s been assigned his old post back in Saddlestring where his family has been living.  However things quickly go wrong on the trail and we are tossed into a rough and rumble ride for Joe, Joe’s family, Nate and a variety of other characters.  It all culminates with a shoot out that Joe will not soon forget and neither will we as readers!

Have you read Nowhere To Run?  I’d love to hear what you thought about it.  At the end of this one I was left thinking a bit.

What about E-Readers?

There’s no doubt that part of the future of publishing is in E-Readers.  However I for one can’t see myself picking up an E-Reader in the near future.  Why you might ask?  Well there’s something I like about being able to pick up a book and read it.  Probably another reason I won’t pick up an E-Reader is the simple fact that I already spent 8+ hours in front of a computer screen and don’t need to spend my reading time doing the same.  My eyes already give me troubles.

Despite my objections to it them there’s no doubt that publishing is going electronic.  Just a little while ago I read an excerpt of Michael Balkinds Sudden death on Book Buzz.  The format was enjoyable for the 10 pages that I read, but would I read a 300+ page book in that format?  I don’t think so.

But here’s the deal.  If having the latest Kindle or iPad gets you to read then by all means pick one of those up and read.  If you think having a book makes you look like a nerd and it’s cool to have an iPad or Kindle, get it.

So where do you fall on the e-readers: gonna get one, can’t live with out it, no thanks I’ll take a hard bound book any day!

Distracted!

It’s obviously been a few months since I’ve posted here.  The main reason is because I’ve been distracted. There are some good distractions and some that I’d call bad or optional distractions.

For instance a lot of my “distraction” the past few months has been World of Warcraft.  I’m still playing, but things have changed and I’m making more of a concerted effort to do things that are more important.  One of those being reading.

I read somewhere recently (and I might be misquoting it), perhaps on Michael Hyatts blog, that leaders read at least one book a month and probably more.  I’m guessing that most of the books that they read are non-fiction, but I’m going to throw fiction in there as well.

Here’s a couple of other distractions that I can think of.

  • TV/Movies
  • Internet
  • Yard Work
  • Kids

Not all bad distractions, but things that might keep you from doing any sort of reading.

So what distracts you from reading?

Why do you read?

After an extended holiday season I’m back.  My goal for 2010 is to continue to bring you fiction for men (I might slip a non-fiction in there!) and hopefully some author interviews.

Here’s how we are going to start 2010 off. Why do you read?

Here’s a few reasons why I read.

  • Escape – It’s cliche (at least that’s what my wife told me when she saw the title of this), but it’s probably the main reason why I read. To enter a world that I will probably never be a part of. To dream of being a multi-millionaire thrill seeking adventurer. But for those novels that aren’t about playboy millionaires, I read to get a different perspective on life.
  • Learn – Fiction is made up but somewhere in there, I’m fairly confident there is something real that we can learn from.
  • It’s not TV or a computer -  During the weekdays I spend 8 hours in front of a computer screen and then come home for more.  The weekends are not usually that bad, but more than I care to admit.

So tell me.  Why do you read?

Pursuit of Honor – Vince Flynn

Pursuit of Honor is a must read.  How’s that for a review?

Honor stars Mitch Rapp, which is Vince Flynn’s flagship if you will.  If you haven’t ready any of the other books, and I highly recommend that you do, Mitch is a somewhat deep cover, no holds bar CIA operative.  This book is a direct follow up to the previous one called Extreme Measures.  In Extreme Measures some terrorists are able to make their way into the US and end up killing quite a few people ( I won’t spoil anything).  Although some of the terrorists are taken care of, the master mind behind it all gets away.  Through most of the books, including Honor, Mitch is being hounded by congress for his actions and he determines that there’s a leak with in the CIA.  We start the novel with Mitch capturing the informant and moving on from there.  At the same time the FBI, who has been put in charge of finding the terrorists, has not been able to find anything.  The president, discretely lets Mitch know that he has free reign to do what needs to be done to catch the bad guys.  In the end like always Mitch gets his man!

This is a REALLY quick read once you get into it.  You can read it without reading Extreme Measures, but you might be confused.

On the man scale this one gets a 3.5 out of 5. There’s action galore and it’s very quick paced through out and you won’t want to put it down.
